Assignment 1
Assignment
1: 2016
Dear forensic
medicine students.
Please
could you peruse the notes I have given you in respect of Identification as
well as Trauma and answer the following questions? We will address the
questions by way of individual presentations on Wednesday during class.
Identification:
- Discuss the basic identification principles. (5)
· How should a
commercial passenger aircraft accident be managed, with specific reference to
the identification of the passengers and crew? (10)
Trauma
- Discuss blunt and sharp force injuries and differentiate between
the different types of such injuries. (10)
·
A man is hit by a cricket bat. Discuss the factors that may
determine the effective wounding force, as well as the different types of
injuries that the man may have sustained as a result of mechanical trauma. (20)
· A man is brought to the emergency
room at a hospital. His head has a linear wound. He alleges that a golf ball
hit him on his head whilst he was playing golf. Discuss the possibility of the
man telling the truth by considering the presentation of the wound and by
discussing the different types of injuries the man should have sustained if he
was in fact hit by a golf ball. (20)
· You are
involved in a trial where the victim was an elderly female who was murdered.
The post-mortem report states that numerous
bruises/ contusions were present over the chest, and there were also fractures
of the ribs and sternum. These fractures were surrounded by fresh hemorrhages. The defense alleges that
these injuries were caused by attempts at resuscitation
by the assailant, and not by the assault itself. How can the pathologist
refute this allegation? (15)
· You are
involved in a trial where the victim had allegedly died of a stab-wound. What
are the most important features regarding this wound which you would look for
in the post-mortem report? (20)
